I own a '78 GS550 that will start and run, but the center two cylinders are not firing. (exhaust pipes stay cool) Plugs have spark, there is gas in each carb. Is synchronization the cure?
Thanks.

If the cylinders fire when you give it some throttle the carbs are probably out of sync. If they never fire it could be a weak coil. One coil fires 1 & 4 and the other coil fires 2 & 3.

You are getting good advice right across the board so far. The GS550 is a nice bike, well worth having if it's decent. The price is not bad as a project bike for an experienced wrench, but if you have to ask, it could be too much for you at any price.

probably a model fitted with contact breaker points ( like my 79 gs 850 ) check they are correctly gapped and ignition timing is correct , its dead easy but if you dont know how you must get a manual. good luck.
