the legend comes from the time when hangings were done on the gallows, it was believed that if you walked under the gallows ladder , the spirit of the hanged criminal would haunt or possess you, the tradition eventually began to be that walking under any ladder would bring bad luck.

personal opinion: i wouldn't want anything (the ladder including) to fall on me


it was believed to be a symbol of God and by going under the ladder you violated the Trinity and could fall prey to Satan

it was also believed you were acting out your execution

becasue thats how they used to hang people i think like they wud put the ladder up and then just hang them lol so i guess its unlucky to walk where people used to be killed idk and i dont care lol
