I have a 98 Kawasaki KX 250. The motor has been dropped and and all I have to do now is crack the case to replace what I believe is the main bearing. Tips?

You said that right. Without the tool, you WILL CRACK the case.
if it wasnt required, no factory would make it, let alone sell it.

Guardrailjim always gives good advice, I would just like to add that sometimes to get the job started you can use a knife. Take an old kitchen knife (I keep one in my toolbox) put the blade against the case joint and tap the back of it with a hammer. Do it near the motor mount areas so that you don't mess up the sealing surfaces. Do it in several places so that the joint separates evenly. IF you pull the blade out of the case at any given spot and the joint snaps shut, STOP, and look again, because, you probably still have a case screw that you missed. As it comes apart work carefully and slow, don't dump the transmission and watch for thrust washers that may be on the tranny shafts. Goodluck !!!

Remove "every" part of the engine so all you have is a crankshaft and crankcase.
With a "dead blow" hammer (plastic with metal shot inside) hit the crank & main shaft of the transmission (the clutch was mounted to it).
Or you can use a heavy hammer with a block of wood so you don't damage the transmission or crankshaft ends.
It will help if someone could hold the right crankcase.
