Do you listen to the instruments or the lyrics?

With me the lyrics always come second, and being a song writer for years it was always the music that came first, and then the lyrics after some people do it the other way round.... but i listen to the instruments first.

I've always listened to the lyrics first and then the music, which I suppose is why I like a wide variety of music overall. For me, it's poetry with music attached to it. With that said, I am a musician at heart and have always been a music lover, so no matter how good the lyrics are, if the music itself isn't quite to my liking, I can't listen to it...

I usually listen to the lyrics first, but only if the instrumental opening catches my attention. If the opening of the song doesn't catch my ear, I won't bother listening at all.

usually the lyrics but if the instruments are loud and demanding I listen to them. There is a song called Bakers Street by Jerry Rafferty that has awesome sax in it.

Both; If the lyrics, draw the Painting that the Artists wishes to convey. The Music, is the Colors that it's filled with. Can't have one, without the other. And fully appreciate it.

to me the instruments speak the feelings of the song, so that first, and then the lyrics that only justify the sound.

When I first pay attention to a track, all I pay attention to is the track first. When I pay attention it for the moment or 3rd time, then I most often pay attention to the phrases. Later on down the avenue, I most often take a look at feel approximately what the lyrics truthfully imply.
