I recently bought a 1992 Suzuki GSX600F Katana sport bike as my first bike, and I was wondering what type of chain lube I should use on it? I've asked a couple people and have heard completely different answers, so I was wondering what you guys think. Some people told me any chain lube is fine, others told me to just use 20w50 motor oil (??).

Do not use WD-40, motor oil, or gear oil.
WD-40 is to thin and will not lubricate properly. The "WD" in WD-40 stands for water dissipater.
Oil is to thick and will not penetrate o-rings of a chain. It will not soak into the rollers of the chain. It will fly off and make a mess.
Use quality, brand name chain lube, or chain wax made specifically for motorcycle drive chains.

I use PJ1 Blue Label chain lube.
It's penetrating properties will get past o-rings.
It is just thick enough to lubricate the rollers properly.
It's sticky, so it won't drip or fly off.
An added feature - it's blue in color. When the color fades, it's a sign that the chain needs to be lubed.

20W50 would be too thin. Chain lube is a special sticky oil that won't get thrown off the chain like gear oil would.

Technically the only sportbike it somewhat is corresponding to the Hayabusa is the ZXR14 from Kawasaki. those 2 motorcycles are in basic terms solid for velocity/overall performance, yet are undesirable with dealing with. something over a litre motorbike (1000 cc) is borderline ineffective on the dealing with factor. It somewhat relies upon on what style of using you want to do. in case you're finding to journey curvy roads then i might stay with the 1000 CC motorcycles OR in case you're actually not a huge guy like me, you will possibly have rather some relaxing with six hundred CC motorcycles. The hayabusas/zxr14's are too enormous and cumbersome to take into the corners like the smaller motorcycles. in case you're only into rapidly line velocity then they're solid motorcycles yet with the aid of lightness of the hundreds and the overall performance advancements obtainable for them, they make incredible sportbikes. even with the reality that they are for sure great motorcycles to customise and do the motorbike tutor scene, or do the drag strip scene. i like the compromise of going rapid AND being waiting to journey some surprising switchbacks with the two the 1000 or six hundred motorcycles. we've been interior the mountains in North Carolina numerous circumstances and having some Busa's interior the mixture, we continually had to stop and wait approximately 10-quarter-hour for them to seize as much as us with the aid of fact they only can no longer maneuver all that great. desire this permits some! i might bypass so a approaches as to assert the 999's, 1000RR, R1, and the different litre motorcycles are in a league on their own.

I use an SAE 80-90 gear oil.

Lucas makes a good one, about $6 a bottle at auto zone.

For a poorly maintained chain, I oil it up once then wipe it down very well then re-add a smaller amount.
