i deleted a few things and then later realised i wanted them back from the recycling bin. But in between i did a disk clean up. is there anyway that i can get those file back?

There's a high probability that you can recover the files you have deleted, even after you reformatted the disk. Deleted files are easy to recover as long as you haven't defragmented your disk or write new file in the location of deleted file. Deleted files are actually only marked as deleted by operating system. They are still in your disk as long as it's location haven't been rewritten by new files.
Try software recovery like Avira Unerase (it's free) or Restoration (also free) or Disk Investigator.

You can scan your hard disk with undelete as long as you have not formated
