Most of the time, you have something materiel that they could use, money, house car, whatever.
Its funny because when you love someone you are willing to do anything, the greatest of con artists know that. I didn't, it was a lesson I had to learn the HARD way.
What I can say is that when its genuine, you will never have to ask that question again.
Don't wear your heart on your sleeve, even if you find that he really does love you.
My mom says you want a man to love you more then you love him.

man if i had a penny for everytime this has happened to me or one of my friends we would be flipping rich they do it for the kicks of watching people that REALLY love them fall for em and end up in tears and then when it happens to them and the tables get turned around it hurts all over again because you know you would never treat them like that and it is also a thrill for them because they know it could cause a lot of problems in their life and they are addicted to the drama and besides that it does not help your broken heart at all knowing all of this it still hurts and will probablly never really heal i have been with my husband for 14 years and the last guy that pretended to be in love with me permantely broke me that is me there are days i actually wait for the bomb to explode and it hasn't so far i am so sorry you are going through this if you need someone to talk to you can email me at giggles47532000@yahoo.com and i will just pray that you are ok well take care

I am not sure why anyone would pretend to be in love with anyone. I pray this is not happening to you though. You are a sweetie.
I am totally understanding you though, I have had someone pretend to love me, and he borrowed thousands of dollars from me. It is not fun to experience, but I have overcome the adversity put in my path. I am a better woman because of it as well.
Blessings

There are many answers to this great question. Physical desire, excitement, risk and power are perhaps some common motivations. Love is available in many forms and does not always last forever or result in a life long relationship. I wish you well and hope that your suffering ends.

I guess it depends on what they have to gain. But if she took back being in love with you - if she'd said that she was in the past, and now claims it was all a lie - she probably does love you, but is trying to hurt you and protect herself. A defensive tactic ...
