Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:
Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!
The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.
Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.
Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.
This is a really beautiful poem too!
Women have strengths that amaze us.
They carry children, they carry hardships, they carry burdens but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up for injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without new shoes so their children can have them.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about a birth or a new marriage. Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They have sorrow at the loss of a family member, yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all sizes, in all colors and shapes.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what makes the world spin!
Women do more than just give birth.
They bring joy and hope.
They give compassion and ideals.
They give moral support to their family and friends.
Women have a lot to say and a lot to give.

give her a gift certificate for a day off. A day where you do the dishes and the cleaning and the cooking. A day where Mom can just relax in front of the television or read a good book. A day where Mom can sleep in if she wants. Doesn't cost you anything except a little sweat and it shows her how much you love her and appreciate her more than spending your last 10 bucks would.

Make her something.
You could create a "coupon book" full of tickets (that read good for one free): foot massage, back rub, home-cooked (by you) dinner, breakfast in bed, hair styling (shampoo and brush out), manicure, car wash, picnic in the park...and anything else you can think of which would be a real treat.
You could buy the ingredients (with your own money) and make a Mother's Day brunch (with croissants, eggs and/or her favorite cereal, fresh fruit salad, fresh-squeezed fruit juice).
Make sure you make (or get) a card and specifically tell her why you're happy that she's your mom.

What I desperately want is for my son to do the little fix-up things around the house that are too high or too hard for me. Like change a light bulb on the ceiling and put back a window screen that blew off the 2nd story. My kitchen faucet is getting more and more leaky. I can't do these things.

I agree with the others, make her something. It really is a better gift then something bought.
Dinner is always nice, or the booklet of I.O.U's, or go to a store like Michaels and get a wreath and some plastic flowers and leaves and make a wreath. My Mom has one on her door all year round, she has a Spring one, a Fall one and a Christmas one.

Go to a dollar store, they have some nice things...I found some beautiful colored glass egg paperweights one year, bought a set of three ...they have nice cards for 50 cents and you can more than likely find a box of chocolates for around $5.

Write her a poem, telling her how you feel about her, offer to do some chores in the next few days. I like the idea of a coupon book, like someone else suggested. A couple of years ago I asked my sons to write me poems, and those poems made me cry.

As of the "jewelery", It may have to wait-but buy something pretty like flowers. (p.s.: I promise I won't "lauph" but I DID "laugh" at your spelling.)

a mothers day gift does not always have to be store bought, take a trip down memory lane and see if you can remember what you made for your mother as a child when you were in grade school and go from there
