I,m trying to find a book title, has anyone ever read this book?

In brief, Based around a kind of speed hand ball game, the main guy wins a tornement after he should have thrown it. Gets run down by the people he won lots of money from and is crippled, taking on a new trainee whilst drinking Jack daniels sour mash green to ease his pain. they move through various tournaments and YMCA's until the trainee turns wrong. dont know anymore dog chewed the book up, Hope you can help, cheers

Sounds a bit like "The Natural" by Bernard Malamud.

Sounds to me like the movie "Kingpin" about bowling.
