Dodgeman: Polaris 2 cycle snowmobile engines actually are able to rotate both clockwise for forward motion and counter clockwise for reverse or backing up. A switch on the handlebars changes ignition timing and flips the capacitive discharge 180 degree spark plug firing causing reverse rotation of the crankshaft. Somehow if electronically the same CDI (capacitive discharge ignition) brain could be stuffed under a weedeater shroud it should work.

He may think about finding a retractable pull starter that would pull the motor counterclockwise and retard the timing on the opposite side of TDC. The port timing for fuel and air in a 2 cycle motor doesn't care which direction the crankshaft spins.

I know you're a heck of a mechanical guy, You'll come up with something.
Good Luck!

Theoretically a 2 cycle engine will run in either direction. So, yes it can be reversed.
