You need to check it with a virus scan, but the only way to do that is to connect it with a computer.
For example, if you use Norton's Internet Security, you go to "scan" then pick out the external hard drive. You do not need to worry about transfering a virus during this scan.

I don't think there is a device with an LCD screen that can be connected to an external hard drive and show if there is a virus.. But this might be a good idea for a future product ;)

No, but as long as you don't execute any programs on it you should be safe. You then can run a virus check on that drive before doing anything else.
