Yes, computer science is still a good field, and yes there are still good job opportunities, if you pick the right area to learn about and pick the right area of the country (some parts of the country are still absorbing people from the dot.com blow-ups and programming/help desk outsourcing).

Right now programming is tough and will be for the next few years, but the Baby boomers are retiring, so the field is going to lose lots of different types of computer professionals. The computer field has always paid well. The projected job opportunities are excellent, if you pick the right areas to focus on (the other areas will be ok, depending on where you live):

Right out of school, if you took classes in these areas, and especially if you work at an internship and get experience, you can find work at an entry level or assistant job as a: network analyst, database analyst, systems analyst, software or hardware engineer, web designer or programmer, data miner, data tester, or computer systems administration. The least likely jobs are as programmers or computer support specialist assistants (help desk), since these jobs are being outsourced, but even then, some of the help desk jobs are being sent back to the US because of the language differences.

Here's a list from the US Dept of Labor of computer jobs that you can get, with their job description, wages and outlook (the average computer job had wages of $43,000 in 2004):

Good luck!

It's not nearly as good a field as it was 10 or 15 years ago, but there are still opportunities for people with the right training. Pay is good for the people employed. You need to have skills in a particular area, such as web design, security or networking to mention a few examples.

Some of the programming and call center/help desk work has been outsourced out of the country, with mixed results, so I'm not sure I see this as a major growing threat. And job opportunities should remain for the future.
