How do I clean and care for wooden salad bowls ?

I have had one crack in the past--p.s. can you fix that?

I too have had experience with a cracked salad bowl. My new one has lasted me for years now. The following is how I care for it.

-Do not soak it in water.
-Do not put it in dishwasher.
-Do not put it in microwave or oven.
-Do not leave it in direct sunlight.


To clean the wood surface, wet a cloth or non-abrasive scrub pad in warm sudsy water and scrub the entire surface until it is free of food. Immediately dry the surface of moisture with a clean cloth or paper towel.

If the wood becomes dry, apply another coat of mineral oil. Don't use vegetable oils because they contain ingredients that may tend to create a culture for bacteria to build up. Vegetable oils also tend to become gummy. Mineral oil is a non-toxic oil that is light textured and will not build up an excessive coating over time. Mineral oil won't stain the wood, however spices and food may discolor the surface over time, especially if the wood becomes dry.

I wouldn't try to fix it since you would have to use glue or some kind of filler on the wood which can give of toxins.
