Are you getting a service engine or check engine light? If not then the computer and the sensors are not your problem. How many miles are on the car? You mentioned that it runs fine some of the time. When it is not doing it is the car cold when it is running fine and this problem happens when it warms up? Does it seem to happen more often after highway speeds? Not sure why the Mechanic would just clean the cables for something like this. You most likely need to have a tune up done if you have never had it done before. If you bought the car new and you have 100,000 or more miles on it. You’re long over do to have a tune up. If this mechanic is not doing the trick for you, find a different one or even take it too the dealer. Now days most dealers are very competitive with their rates simply because the independent shops have taken so much business from them. I'm willing to be you have some bad plugs and wires on the engine. Take it to the dealer and ask about their complete tune up and see what it involves. A true complete tune up is, replacement of Spark plugs, Spark plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, Oil change, Throttle plate cleaning, Cleaning of throttle cable and adjustment of cable if needed. This is our typical tune up for all 98 cars. I'm willing to bet if this work is completed then the problem will be resolve. If the problem still continues then you may likely have a problem with the torque converter staying in the lock-up sequence. This may require replacement of the converter or could simply be an adjustment to the transmission. Depends on what the diagnostics comes back as. But with out knowing if you have a check engine light. It's difficult to say. Hope this helps and I would look at getting a different mechanic.

Sounds like low fuel pressure which could be caused by a restricted fuel filter, bad fuel pump or relay, or pressure regulator, injectors. Filter or relay would be easiest and cheapest to replace first....they should test the pressure first, if low, replace filter and pump relay and then retest. If pressure ok, it could be dirty injectors.Have the injectors ever been cleaned? how many miles on truck? You should put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in a tank of gas every few months to keep them clean..cheap maintenance. Otherwise they can be professionally cleaned on the vehicle or off and tested.
Just a few tips for you, Paul

no longer achievable to assert. There are too many possibilities. in many cases, that form of problem would gentle the examine engine gentle and furnish you with a code to bypass through. First position i'd seek for an idle situation will be vacuum leak, besides the indisputable fact that it ought to also be gas pump, gas clear out, throttle position sensor, gas injectors, or any of quite a few different aspects interior the emissions administration equipment.

one other sneaky culprit can be the air filter. a dirty one at low idle may not allow enough oxygen to mix with fuel.

fuel filter is still another good possibility. sometimes using cheap gas will deposit small pieces of gunk in fuel filter restricting flow of gas to oxygen mixture.

Also, if it is missing even with gas pedal down a little you may need new spark pugs and wires.
good luck.

Sounds like your engine is running way too rich. Get it computer analyzed (by someone you trust) before you do anything else.

Also, you might want to check the flux capacitor.
