in baseball if the home team wins the game can the away pitcher pitch a complete game even tho he only pitched 8 innings

Yep. As long as the game is official and the one pitcher makes every pitch and is not relieved, he is credited with a complete game.

Here's a rain-shortened example: 27-April-1997, Padres at Braves, Atlanta winning 2-0, game called with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Both Maddux and Valenzuela were credited with complete games.

Yes its a complete game but the first answer you got is wrong...the pitcher is not credited with a complete game in the stats unless he at least meets 2 criteria, those being the ones you mentioned...just like if a pitcher pitches a no hitter for 9 innings and gets injured and then someone comes in and gives up a hit, the pitcher at most would get an asterisk next to his name in the books but not an official no hitter

Yes. A complete game can even be 4 innings if the game is called after 4 1/2 innings with the home team ahead.

Yes. As long as the pitcher pitched the whole game, it is a complete game no matter how many innings there are.
