I am taking my 5 month old son to our lakehouse at the end of the month. I would like to begin to introduce him to the water, as he loves bathtime and I think he will be a water baby. Anyone know of any good floats for infants? I would like one with a supportive seat, as he can sit supported, but not quite by himself. I would also prefer a sunshade, but this is not a must as I have read bad reviews of many floats with shades. Also, any water baby tips would be helpful. Thanks!

They have ones similar to this at Walmart and I think Target does too. I have one like this without the canapy. They are great for kids 6 months and up...no floats are really intended for use with children who can't sit up, so just be aware of that and use it with caution. Have fun!

Having worked for several years as a lifeguard and swim instructor (include babies there!), I am dead-set against flotation devices used in pools for babies or young children for a couple of reasons. First, they are unreliable and give a false sense of security. Second, they interfere with stroke development and "water adjustment" (the feeling of comfort in the water and a sense of buoyancy, plus putting the face in the water easily).
It is the responsibility of the parent to begin water safety precautions with the baby. Teach that he is NEVER allowed to go in the pool without an adult in the water who invites him in. Sit him on the edge of the pool deck and ask him in while you hold him. It is a good idea to take him under water and turn him around to teach him to grab the rim of the pool.
Keep the experience positive and short. If the pool temperature is under 88F, he'll last only about 20 minutes before he starts to turn blue from the cold water. The ideal temperature for a pool for baby instruction is about 92F.
Have fun!

They are called "floogles" purchased at a sporting good store
and are inflatable that are put on the baby's upper arms to
keep them afloat. They work very well. And since you have
him around water. There are swimming classes for baby's
that age. I know, my sister-in-law, who lives on a lake up in
Canada, has six children, and they learned at an early age.
