You will probably want very fine natural sand. The following online store sells Japanese Zen Garden sand:
http://www.toport.com/diy_supplies.html
Also try the following:
1. Hobby Lobby
2. Online stores:
http://www.sandartsupplies.com/
http://www.kidsserenity.com/kids/
http://www.cmi-ny.com/index.php
http://www.orientaltrading.com
3. You could also try a local pet and aquarium store for natural sand.
Good luck!

Silica sand would work well for this. It is inexpensive, It is a very fine white sand. Do were a dusk mask when working with any sand , especially the fine silica or craft sand. Any home center or lumber yard should have silica sand in 50 pound bags for less than ten dollars.

I almost ordered my invitations online as well. I am so glad I did not. I would suggest going to an invitation store in your home town. There is no return on the invitations so if you fill in the information wrong your invitations are ruined. I would go to a store so you are able to sit down and speak with someone and plan it out with them so you are sure they come out great! What I spend at the store compared to online prices was not much of a difference.

Go to your nearest home store. Home Depot, Menards and buy silica sand. It is a very fine white sand. It usually comes in a 50lb. bag and is only a few bucks. Good luck.

Yep both answers are valid, you might even try JoAnn Fabrics craft dept.
The sand you speak of is dyed and it's like "sugar sand", to resist clumping from moisture. Certainly if you only need a single, natural color a Home Depot of Lowes also sells various types/grades of sand in larger quantities.

Great idea in any case and congratulations.
