The oven is 18months old so 6 months past its warranty. They have offered to replace the glass for free (£45) whilst i pick up the labour price (min £75). I think this is not on as you pay over £1000 for an oven like this and its not due to wear and tear. Also the fact that we had the children in the kitchen when this happened and could have been nasty.
Can anyone offer advice on what to do next?

You can claim for damages under the Consumer Protection Act 1987 Part 1 for damage to your property if the cost of repairing the damage is over £275, and for personal injury if there was any. Also, you are entitled to a full refund or replacement at no cost to yourself. I would write to the company stating this and if they do not comply by offering refund or replacement and the cost of repairing your kitchen, then you can take them to court. Speak to a solicitor for further advice.

Smeg Oven Door Glass

This item is not 'fit for purpose' nevermind it being out of warranty you should expect to safely use your oven for many years. Had you or any of your family or friends been injured you would no doubt be taking legal action. You've thought about what could have happened if a child was nearby and presumably so have they and probably wouldn't want people to know about this. I most likely would still be unhappy with replacement glass as what's to say it won't happen again. I would write to them again asking for a full replacement and explaination as to why this has happened and reassurance that it won't happen again. It could be a faulty batch of glass but you (and they) need to know. If you do not get any satisfactory answers go to your local paper (let Smeg know what you are doing, might get them moving quicker) and also email Watchdog, you may not have been the only people affected.

We had our outer glass break on our oven just a few months ago - unfortunately the manufacturer had gone into administration and was not able to help. We contacted our buildings and contents insurer who tried to claim that it was wear and tear, we were just cooking a potato - like richard said stick to your guns on this one - after about 2 months of fighting they finally agreed that the exploding was not wear and tear and had to replace the whole oven due to the glass for this make not being made anymore. I wish your mum the best of luck in getting it replaced - it can be a real struggle but stay strong and you will get the right outcome in the end. Good luck

You MAY have a 2 year warranty. From around January 2002 there was supposed to be a change in European law that required the warranty to be TWO YEARS, I don't know for sure if all manufacture res have been obliged to comply yet, but many appliance manufacturers have upped their guarantee period to two years. I would look into this further, and see what Smeg's is!?

Ask them how they'll feel when you contact a consumer group like Which or watchdog looking for similar stories. Ask them if they think it's reasonable that this happens to their product after only eighteen months, surely they would have tested for many eventualities before putting the product on the market. Explain that you think that this makes their product unsafe and unreliable despite a hefty price tag. Tell them you are considering taking legal advice.

Yeah, you would definately have a case if you wouldn't to sue them - so maybe tell them that's your plan and offer them one last chance. Otherewise you ca get some lawyers who offer services with no fee till you win if you're strapped for cash. One other thing - try to get them to give you a replacement oven and not just the glass then it'll be less likely to happen again, cause it does soound dangerous!

Happened to me once. look, it was 6 months out of warranty, I think they are making a generous gesture giving you the glass for free. I bet it was the internal glass as well.
