How to keep bartlett pear tree small but still bearing?

I've received a bartlett pear tree as a gift. My backyard does not have enough space to accomodate a 20' tree with that kind of width. I am pretty sure it is not a dwarf variety. I know VERY little about this stuff. Is there a way to keep it small and still bearing fruit or is it worth asking my brother in law to exchange it for a dwarf variety?

Sure you can keep it small. Prune it regularly.

I say yes. Was in Cal in Decembe
