I recently formatted and re-installed XP PROFESHIONAL... Everything seems fine -- except there's no sound what so ever (only the beep from the internal speaker).

If i go control panel > sounds and audio devices, the volume tab is greyed out and reads "no audio device". I had sound on here an it was all working fine before the re-install.

So err.. Any ideas??
-- I have no idea what so ever my sound card is..
-- I have no infomation or booklets about my PC..

I have the same problem. I've tried everything but no luck. I think it's a trap built in. When I run the boated version of Window XP Media Center (which I hate and crashes) that came with my Toshiba, sound works. When I reformat and install just an OEM copy of Windows XP, there is no sound. I have a feeling it's some setup to discourage one from taking off all the PC manufacturer bloatware. I've tried this same process before on other computers and everything worked fine. Hope you get yours fixed.

You have not installed the drivers. After a fresh install of an OS such as Win XP, next that should be loaded is the motherboard drivers, then the graphics card driver, then the soundcard driver, etc.

you will have to go to your motherboards manufacturers website to get the latest audio drivers.
