Greenpyro is generally right. A few states allow a candidate to take the bar without having gone to law school if the candidate has apprenticed with an attorney. The law school you go to is a very important indicator of the type of job you will get and the type of client you will get.

Most states require you to graduate from an accredited law school and then pass that state's Bar Exam. California only requires the Bar Exam to be passed. However, California's Exam is widely considered to be the hardest in the U.S.
Each state has its own individual requirements. contract the Board of Bar Examiners for your state for specifics.

You must successfully complete law school, pass the BAR exam, and be of good enough character to be admitted to the BAR in the state you wish to practice in.
