The name I go by here on Answers is my 'spirit name'... it was *given* to me, but by all accounts (if I understand my culture's traditions correctly) it has always been mine.
At birth I was named with the feminine equivalent to my father's name, who in turn was named for my Grannie's favourite brother who died from TB in an Indian Residential school.
I was going to say that we go by the name we choose... but I think my answer has evolved since I first started typing. All of my names are about my relationships with the people I love... whether it's Andrea, Mikisew Awasis, Pom, sister, or any of my other various nicknames. We choose our names by whom and what we honour and keep in our daily lives.

All of my names have been given to me but I get to choose which of the names I will use and when to use them.

Well, literally speaking, my name was given to me by my parents and most of my real-life nicknames were given to me by my friends...all my usernames are my own though....
And metaphorically speaking...well i think that you cant escape being named...labelled..profiled even by other people, they will always have an idea about you...be it accurate or not....but all you have to remember is that none of those names matter and none of them mean anything, because you´re the only person who can define who you are.

My names are always given to me...permanent and nick names. Though my brother was given my father's name at birth. He changed it at 5 years old and no one has since called him otherwise.
However, he is now obsessed with Japanese culture and accordingly renamed himself once again.

My parents gave me the first and second (and the last actually) I gave up my last name and took my husbands last name when we were married,

My real name was given to me by my mother, it is her sisters middle name and my yahoo ID's say a little about me. ;-)
