for communicating with your host, i mean your computer sends bites to your internet service provider if its still avaible , and you are getting response from your service provider, because of that you are sending bites.
go start -> run -> type cmd -> and type netstat -a
you will see many different IP in there, these are connected hosts like your isp , your modem , isp router ... Your computer everytime sends bites for communicate

Could be spy ware.. which is a bit like a virus, but not as bad - if you go to www.download.com and download ADAWARE and HIJACKTHIS and do a scan on them both. HIJACKTHIS displays everything on your computer that starts up and runs when you first start it. Tick all the suspicious things, and remove. Make sure you dont remove anything to do with your internet connection such as AOL, or anything to do with your Printetr etc. When running ADAWARE do a full system scan. Then delete everything that comes up.. Below are the links to both programs.

I seriously hope it is because(in my case) the laptop or PC is still communicating with the router even though I could have my browser closed and even have my modem turned off. Those two devices still have to communicate, but there is no send or receive data being transferred on the Internet when that is happening.

Check your network protocols, could just be your provider.
Do you have a firewall? do not use windows firewall ,try zonealarm , it's a free download at download.com, not only one of the better firewalls out there, you'll also be able to monitor which programs access the internet.

It is either a spyware/malware, or even worse, your operating system trying to contact its ``manufacturer'' with information like your name, address, etc. and whether you are using genuine OS.
