A democracy is where people elect a representative to vote for them in legislation .
A republic is where the people vote themselves on legislation .
We were founded as a republic, but it was unrealistic at the time to be able to notify all the people to go vote on legislation ,with communication as it was at the time .So we elected people to represent the people of an area and vote their feelings for them (a democracy ) How ever a democracy only works if you can hold your representative accountable for their actions (which we cant ) Today we could return to the republican form of govt. intended .Democracy is not mentioned once in the constitution or bill of rights .

"The chief characteristic and distinguishing feature of a Democracy is: Rule by Omnipotent Majority. In a Democracy, The Individual, and any group of Individuals composing any Minority, have no protection against the unlimited power of The Majority. It is a case of Majority-over-Man."
"A Republic, on the other hand, has a very different purpose and an entirely different form, or system, of government. Its purpose is to control The Majority strictly, as well as all others among the people, primarily to protect The Individual’s God-given, unalienable rights and therefore for the protection of the rights of The Minority, of all minorities, and the liberties of people in general. The definition of a Republic is: a constitutionally limited government of the representative type, created by a written Constitution--adopted by the people and changeable (from its original meaning) by them only by its amendment--with its powers divided between three separate Branches: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. Here the term 'the people' means, of course, the electorate."
This is direct quotes off the web page annotated below. {BTW, http://www.google.com accepts keywords for things like this, this type of question etcetera, by doing something as simple as going to google then typing in, for example, democracy versus republic definition -- and that was the first listing besides the upper book section out of 942,000 'hits' for that particular search.}

Democracy: Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.
Republic: a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them.
The only difference I have found is stated here...
Democracy and Republic are often taken as one of the same thing, but there is a fundamental difference. Whilst in both cases the government is elected by the people, in Democracy the majority rules according to their whims, whilst in the Republic the Government rule according to law.
