SF2 is covalent. S can readily expand its valency octet to accommodate two extra electrons in SF4.

MgF2 is ionic. The 3rd and 4th ionisation enthalpies of Mg are so high that the formation of MgF4, despite a potentially large lattice enthalpy, would be seriously endothermic.
