I hope you will have a wonderful and a safe trip! I worry so much about flying anymore since the 9/11 travesty. I used to fly back and forth between the USA and overseas quite frequently and now I am afraid of flying. I hope your grandchildren also enjoy their trip with their grandfather. How nice! As far as smoking, I don't have any advice, as I have never smoked. My parents both smoked, my son and daughter both smoked and my spouses smoked, also. I just never picked a cigarette up and tried one because I couldn't stand to breathe in the smoke that was all around me as it was. I guess I like oxygen better. Ha! My mom's dad was part Welsh.
Edit to your Edit:
I'm not clear about what you mean about the no smoking rule you are referring to. I also didn't understand about grandfather, mum and dad disappearing. I sure hope all is well. I will say a prayer for all of you.
Are you saying there is no smoking anywhere in the town you are going to in Wales, at all. That would be horrible for a smoker! I'm so sorry for you. Take care.

It is an unfair law and I'm a lifelong non-smoker.
It's against house rules in my house to smoke in the garden. I insist you smoke inside.
The reason being, when I was a child, my favourite aunt (and godmother) who lived (and still does) 200 miles away used to come up to the North East (from Brum) once or twice a year. She'd divide her stay between her three sisters. She'd come to ours about twice during her stay for a couple of hours each time. Unfortunately, she's a life-long chain smoker and because I was 'delicate' (pause for hysterical laughter) everyone used to smoke in the garden and I was never allowed to go out with them because ... well, I might catch a chill and that would be bad apparently (I have a hole in my heart - never bothered me except in ways I would rather it didn't such as this - I've just had an ECG because I got a scare and the doctor said I have a very healthy heart).
Consequently, I saw my Aunt for a few minutes a year, usually on her way from the front door to the back door and I wasn't impressed. I made my mind up when I was EIGHT that when I was older people would come to see me, not the garden.
My brother doesn't ask now, he just goes and gets an ash tray though my new sister in law does try to sneak off when I'm not looking and one of my sister's daughters tried to lay the law down with her sister by sending her outside, until I intervened.
So, although I can understand why parents don't want 'delicate' children breathing in smoke, I'm sure the children would prefer to have the time with their grandparents/aunt/uncle etc.
By the way, I've lived 40 years longer than 'they' thought I would (I'm 41), hale and hearty, never have more than the occasional cold and I have sat in the smokiest of staff rooms.

It is not only unfair mate it's an infringment of a civil right, if the non-smokers want more fresh air then fine......let them stand outside the pub freezing their bollocks off, sounds unfair at first, but that's what they want us to do !!

Just go outside for your smoke. Its also very unfair for nonsmokers to have to breath the foul smoke from other peoples cigarettes. We don't like our clothes and hair smelling of cigarette smoke and it tastes horrible never mind all the health risks. Just imagine if you were standing in a pub and a local farm worker walked in smelling strongly of cow dung and this is libel to happen in rural areas. Would you not think he should go outside as it would be unfair for you to have to put up with the smell well its the same for cigarettes
