Depends where they were exploring and how they were travelling. Explorers on horseback travelling across open country would go further than those on foot fighting through impenetrable jungle. If they were exploring a river were they relying on indigenous people to transport them by canoe, or did they have, as some Victorian explorers did, a steam launch. Was that river wide and unobstructed, or did they have to portage around rapids? Captain Scott travelled slower than Admundsen in the Antarctic as he and his companions were driven to pulling their own sledges. Then there is the matters of supplies, An expedition which was relying on numerous porters to carry supplies would travel slower than one where the explorers were trying to live off the land.

As you will see from these comments, this is one of those questions which cannot be given a hard and fast answer.

For the most part 15 to 20 miles a day was pretty much the limit for explorers on horseback or on foot. They walked from sun up until sundown. This was a large part of the reason for Lewis and Clark's voyage to find an all water route to the west coast.

I am assuming you are asking how far a group on Horseback would travel in a day.

Though a Horse can move faster than a human, they do not for any great length of time. a Person travelling cross country walks his horse as often as not as riding the horse. and even then he rides at a walking pace. The advantage of a horse is not greater speed of travel, but greater ability to carry your equipment and without tiring yourself.

A Group of explorers in the wilderness using horses or other pack animals would travel about 15 to 20 miles in a day, given rest times and setting up and breaking down camps at the beginning and end of each day.

As far as their feet could carry them, besides, even though cars weren't invented, who said they didn't have motorbikes.
