Sadly that answer might really be YES... but the good news is the rest of the world is fast on our heels.

"Americans continue to get fatter
By DrRich

According to a recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the prevalence of obesity in the U. S. population continues to increase at an alarming rate. This report describes a survey conducted in 1999 and 2000 among 4115 men and women, showing that 64.5% of Americans are overweight, 30.5% are obese, and 4.7% are extremely obese. These results represent a significant increase in obesity and overweight just over the past few years. (Ten years earlier, a "mere" 55.9% of adults were overweight, 22.9% were obese, and 2.7% were extremely obese.)

These increases in obesity were seen in all demographic groups: in men and women, in all age groups, and in whites, African Americans, and Hispanics. The increases in obesity reported in this study represent a continuation of a disturbing trend that began in the late 1970s or early 1980 s. "

It is somewhat true and I was born and raised and still live in the United States. There are far too many reports by the CDC and the NIH to demonstrate that there is most certainly a weight problem in the U.S. Plus, just by plain-view daily observation I definitely see a lot of overweight people during my commute and at work. It probably wouldn't be so bad if suburbia had never happened. Basically, everything here is spread out and you can't walk or ride your bike to anywhere unless you live in a small town. Plus, the omnipresence of fast food, tv and computers doesn't help either. The diet is pretty awful too, too high in fat and meat.

As far as the lazy stereotype is concerned, I'm more inclined to disagree. Americans work some of the longest hours on the planet, hence that is why the American economy is so powerful (in addition to clever planning, business sense, etc.).

I would say Americans on the by and by are pretty ignorant of world and cultural affairs and that they are arrogant at their placement in the world.

I think it's sad that most Americans are fat and I believe it can be attributed to their blindness and stupidity. (I'm American, by the way.) It's so annoying how all these people here don't read anything about what they should be eating. They buy into the garbage fed to them by corporate marketers and are way too lazy to research something so they believe a food label that says "low fat!". Ugh...it's so embarrassing. When you try to tell them about it, they call you a cynic! No, dumb dumb, I'm just not a blind follower like you...I actually think about what I'm putting into my body! American culture isn't all bad, but is often very, very disappointing.

I'm 6'3" and weigh 170 pounds. I lift weights just to stay in shape. When I work out I do ab exercises equivalent to 200 crunches, and I walk on a regular basis. If you look around you can find all body types. The media does focus quite heavily on overweight Americans though.

Not all American...but in general yes. We are the fatest country on the planet, and I know people are going to say that it's because we are also the richest, but we are a lazy breed of people here. I see people in my apartments driving thirty seconds to go check their mail, and by the time they've got in the car, turned it on, backed out and got to the mailbox, I've walked there in the same amout of time.

They also think that we are all interested in every detail of every quasi-celebrity's life, and that we all have the IQ of a rock. Perhaps they got that idea from watching some of the popular daytime television shows?

With lack of exercise and fast fatty foods, this is the fattest generation yet, and the media wants us to know.

No. Some of us are fat and energetic. Some are skinny and lazy. Some of us even have better things to worry about.
