The top reason I have a cell phone is so that my parents can get ahold of me and I can get ahold of them. Also in case of emergencies.

I don't even have my own phone, there's just a 'kids' cell phone' that we share. Whoever is going to be gone (ex: babysitting) takes it with them. My two older sisters have their own phones (and pay the charges) because they are gone a lot at college and things like that.

they should have a cell phone - So that their parents can contact them at any time and in case of an emergency, or if they have a lot of extracurricular activities and they travel a lot

Other than that, that's it really. They want one because their friends have one, that's bogus. I didn't get a cell till I was a senior in high school because I started traveling a lot.

for safety reasons in case they get stranded somewhere..or just to check in with their parents..i got a cell when i was 14 and i would basically only use it to call home/mom to check in or when i needed a ride. my lil sis got one when she was 12 and she does the same thing..parents usually get cells for their kids for this reason..kids may buy their own cell to talk to their friends..which is an unnecessary cell phone use i think.

well parents know that it's for emergency reasons and communication, but people(teens)use them for chatting with friends etc.or contact friends or something like that, but cellphones have very good use. i got mine early i think since first grade(i'm only 11)

i think its a bunch of crap...im 26 and have a lil sis who is 9, asking for a cell phone....OK..i didnt get a cell phone until i could pay for it...parents who get their ridiculously young kids a phone should be slapped..its a lazy way to parent..i have a 20yr old brother who lives w/my dad and ran up a $600 phone bill w/no job..but my dad always gave him everything he wanted..who's feeling it now?? my son will definitely understand the value of a dollar before it comes to this...

because we have responibility and will pay the cell phone charges.
so they can take digital pictures and post them online to their friends
so they can compete with their friends with games, etc.
so it won't tie up the parents phone
so they can call 911 if someone they know insists on driving home drunk
