They are completely taking over, and Mom wants to use Roundup. I have heard that that doesn't really work with them anyway, but besides - herbicides! YUCK! Any other suggestions? How do I get rid of these things...before they get rid of my yard?

Horsetail prefer poor soil so by adding lots of rich manure should get rid of it, lots of fresh dung that's what you need.

GOOD NEWS!!! There's an active ingredient called; "TRICLOPYR", that has been found to give very good control of horsetail. It is sold as "Brush-B-Gone" or "Brush-Killer" at most hardware stores and it works in a similar way to Roundup. (By the way, Roundup does not work well on horsetail) Triclopyr is a non-selective herbicide that kills weeds and shrubs down to their roots.

I used to have the same problem. I use a herbacide called "Crossbow". It doesn't sound like you care for herbacides...but this is your only reasonable option unfortunately. You can find Crossbow at Farm stores like Cenex. Typically big box stores (Lowes & Home Depot) don't carry it. It's too potent. Crossbow works great, because it only kills broad leaf plants (weeds, like Horestail!) not your grass. (Roundup kills your grass) So it is safe to mix the concentrate in a sprayer and spot spray the horsetail. In about 2-3 days the horsetails turns black and dies off. Make sure you read the label to determine how much concentrate to mix with water. I use about 4-5 oz. for 3-4 gallons of water. Good Luck!!
