Depends.
1. If the chicken is the mother so it is the chicken.
2. If the chicken is from the egg then obviously the egg.
3. As others said, if God made the chicken, it is the chicken.
4. If you're talking about the order of the words, it is the egg.

The egg of course. This is the age old debate of "Spirituality vs. Evolution". Trace it back far into time and you'll find the earliest eggs were "coincidental" lifeforms brewed from the elements (probably from a comet or other form of water), soon evolution began.
If a mighty god placed the chicken on the earth (which is the easiest answer), then maybe the chicken came first. But unlikely.

Do you believe in creation or evolution?
Creation: God made the chicken, then later in life the chicken laid an egg.
Evolution: At some point during the evolutionary process from a non-chicken ancestor, from an egg hatched the 1st real chicken.
Pick your fancy. No one knows for sure, but the argument will eventually break down along those lines :)

Depends on which theory of the world and it's beinning you believe in. If you believe strictly in the religious theory, or to religious scholars, it's not a theory but the truth, then God created all animals, including the chicken but of course he would have had to create a hen and a rooster or egg or not, you aren't going to have more chickens. Roosters have to fertilize an egg for it to develope into a chick.
If you believe in the scientific theory of Darwin's Theory of Evolution, then the chicken most likely evolved out of necessity from a lower form of animal life. There have been skeletal remains of winged creatures who reproduced by the laying of eggs and lived millions of years ago.
I being a practicing Catholic find that I am comfortable in the blending of both theories, afterall, someone had to make the first animal for all the others to evolve from but I don't believe that chickens as we know them today, would or could have survived unchanged through the millions of years. I raise chickens for a hobby started by our kids first and left to us, the parents, and chickens are probably the dumbest animals around. It's not surprising that they are so low on the food chain.

this question always leaves me thinking for hours. i think the chicken came first but wasnt hatched out of an egg. maybe a species which slowly developed into a chicken (like man) and then nature took its course. the same question can be applied to the homo erectus/ sapian (or what ever) with evolution.

I usually have eggs for breakfast. Sometimes I have chicken for dinner. So the eggs come first, naturally.
