Mostly depending on your needs. I would look for Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB ram, discrete graphics card, dvd rewriteable drive, at least 80gb hard drive @ 7200rpm, Windows Vista Ultimate, and integrated wireless card.

RAM and Processing power, because it is very hard to upgrade a laptop, you would want to buy a machine that would last you for a while before it would be outdated. I would suggest looking at 2GB of RAM and Dual Core Intel Processor.

memory,processor, wi-fi the more juice and memory the better it will be!

memory, wireless internet, avoid windows vista b/c i heard that is just crap-i had experience with it and it was stupid, theres more but i listed the important stuff
