Brand new bottle used twice caps been on tight. Gorilla glue does this too.

If the lid is sealed tightly after every use, then a bottle of correction fluid should last indefinitely (months to years).

But, if the cap is left off or loose even once, gumminess will be noticeable after only a few hours, and no, there is no going back. You can try diluting the fluid with water, alcohol or acetone with limited success, but no solvent really produces very usable results. Priced at under $2, it's far easier and more reliable to just buy a new bottle.

At one time there was a solvent for gummy white-out. I don't know if it is still available.

It gets gummy because it's exposed to air.
