Singles is the best soundtrack (IMHO)
I always look at the movie on imdb.com for soundtrack listings.

"The Exorcist." You can either get the soundtrack from it or get Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells' which is where the main song came from. Spooky and beautiful music.
My other pics for best soundtrack would be:
"The Mission"
"Chariots of Fire"
"The Man With the Golden Arm"
"The Last Emperor" (if you like Chinese-sounding music)
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind"
"Rocky"
"The Godfather"

"The Royal Tenenbaums" soundtrack is brilliant. Nico, Paul Simon, Ramones, Elliot Smith, John Lennon & Bob Dylan on one perfect CD. Add on the enchanting & whimsical score by Mark Mothersbaugh--what more could you want?
I also very much like the soundtracks from "Garden State," "Forest Gump" & "Walk the Line."
Peace!

Depends on the type of music you like. Personally my favorites are the soundtracks from the movies "The Big Chill" and "Forest Gump".

...John William's Acadamy-Award winning score to 1978's "Superman-The Movie"; the soundtrack is so applicable and poignant to the film, one has only to shut their eyes while listening to it, and the movie unfolds itself in the mind.
...John Harrison's score to 1985's "Day of the Dead", directed by George A. Romero; Harrison's haunting cut, entitled "The Dead Suite" is so engrossing and compelling, it's almost like experiencing an audible journey into a horrifically dark and hellish abyss, and yet still escaping from it...relatively unscathed.
...and let us not forget the rousing hard-rock samplings of the soundtrack to 1981's "Heavy Metal"; every song exemplifies the film, and it's select story segments. You can't go wrong with entries from a power-performer line-up like Sammy Hagar, Riggs, Blue Oyster Cult, Donald Fagan, Stevie Nicks, Journey, Cheap Trick, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Nazareth, Trust, Black Sabbath, and Devo!!!
