People recycle their "cool" around what they hear every ten years. Nirvana dominated the 90's, but now we are well past that. Nirvana is effectively retro to these junior high, high school kids and college freshmen. Fall Out Boy is just happening for them.
Encourage them to listen to Tool so they can fall back on Nirvana.

It's just a sign of the times. Fallout Boy is given a lot of exposure, so high school kids today are picking up on it, and liking what they hear. It's not all that disimilar to the way 90s bands where exposed to kids like Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots.
Before that it was 80s hair bands that where popular. Today you have a new sub-genre of pop and emo rock that's becoming the popular form of rock music today.
The only difference is that there are still newer bands like Shinedown that have more of a 90s rock type sound and style. Until recently you had Audioslave keeping a 90s influenced sound strong (what else would you expect from a combination of Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine members).

I'm a highschool kid, I wasn't around in the grunge days. Wel I was born during them but that doesn't count. Alot of my friends listen to Fall Out Boy. I listen to alot of music, including fall out boy. I also listen to alot of grunge too. I've listened to Beatles, Elvis, everything new and old. And I honestly feel that Nirvana, and Kurt Cobains songwriting and skill as a muscian is by far the most real, and pure kind of music I've ever listened to.
Fall Out Boy is a post punk band, they're just followers, their songs and lyrics are essentially just pop music, and remeber, pop literally means "popular" not Britney Spears and stuff.
I truly think that Nirvana in a deeper sense was better than the Beatles, and TRUST me I LOVE the Beatles. Nirvana is just so deep, haunting, and it doesn't feel like Kurt set out to actually make a "popular" ever, except with "teen spirit" because he admitted he wanted to make a pop song, and the lyrics actually are supposed to mock the whole concept of what people thought the song was trying to do.
Of course theres probably plently of undiscovered bands, or bands I simply haven't heard that have equally "real" sound if not better.
Of course alot of people don't see the realness of Kurts lyrics because they don't like the initial layer of their sound. Nirvana WAS an alternative band, so if its not what your used too, or just don't like other bands like them, and automatically associate Nirvana with them, you won't like their sound.
I mean, I don't like Linkin Park AT ALL but for all I know their songs could be about the craziest, deepest phylosophical stuff ever.
