That depends..

The American Film Institute rates Citizen Kane as the greatest movie of all time and it's easy to see why it's an amazing film and invented techniques still used today. AFI is about to do another Greatest Films of All Time list so it may change but i doubt it. Everyone who is a devotee of films from buffs to directors list it as a favorite.

Orson Wells was way ahead of his time check out his other films too The Third Man is a classic as is Touch of Evil. Even after Citizen Kane he was coming up with new tricks.

Now if the Oscars had their say it would be a tie between Titanic, Lord of the Rings Return of the King and Ben-Hur (the color version...it was a remake the original was silent and one of the first films to show nudity). These three films tie for most Oscars won the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the most Oscar winning film series of all time.

But what do dollars say? Sorry Titanic fans but when you adjust for inflation to get a TRUE and ACCURATE winner for the biggest money maker ever it goes to Gone With The Wind. Titanic doesn't even make the top five when you factor in inflation.

Adjusted for inflation here's the Top 5 Films by US gross..

1 Gone with the Wind
2 Star Wars
3 The Sound of Music Fox
4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
5 The Ten Commandments

Star Wars is the most money making franchise in history when you factor in the merchandising (toys, shirts, etc.)

i think of they are able to prepare this to video clips that are made now and flow forward. Cigarette companies sponsor specific video clips to aim toddlers and youths. they supply lots of money to have their "product located" in the action picture. If the action picture is rated greater the action picture could have much less of an aim audience and loose action picture on that time. i think of they are attempting to point the playing container and do away with the financial income. inspite of the incontrovertible fact that to fee the flicks from the previous in this way could be stupid, it is judging history by potential of the cultural norms of immediately. sometime our newborn's toddlers would be rolling their eyes at our old suggestions and ideology. issues replace.

it's rare that i agree with a committee on anything, but i think AFI has it right......Citizen Kane # 1. Very ground breaking with camera angles--the Orson Welles actually dug holes in the ground of the set to get unique camera angles looking up at the actor(s).
