Drop in to your local Chevy dealer and pick up a copy of the 2007 GM Performance Parts Catalog. The part number is: 19170580.

There ar two relatively new Vortec Bowtie heads. PN. 25534421 HAS 185 cc intake ports and 65cc exhaust ports. The combustion chambers are 66cc's The deck thickness is .450 ready for any angle milling you want. This set can stand .530 valve lift with no modifications. It's machined for 2.0 intakes and 1.55 exhausts.

PN. 255344431 is the large port head. 215cc intake and 84cc exhaust port size. All other specs are the same as above. They each have tapped holes for 7/16 screw in studs.

Both of these designs will out flow the old double hump cast iron "fulie" heads and are worth 30 - 40 more hp. over a non - Vortec head. The secret is the shape of the combustion chamber. It's totally different than anything Chevrolet has made to date Both valves are completely un-shrouded. The Chevrolet catalog has great photos of the chambers.

The ports and vortec chamber design keeps the fuel in suspension better than the old design. The flame travel is very efficient thus more horsepower and fuel economy.

The Vortec heads are designed to make the air swirl . Not all center bolt sbc heads are vortec so dont get tricked into buying Vortec heads when they are not .

It's not just a name but, in fact, as the first two guys state it is from the cylinder head design that swirls the air/fuel mixture, and that swirling does promote better combustion. I think the Japanese were the first to promote this when they introduced the Honda CVCC in about 1969. As I recall the acronynm CVCC stood for controlled vortex combustion chamber. Even the lowly Suzuki Sidekick used it beginning in 1989. Hope this helps.

Its just a model name...Ford calls their engines "triton", Dodge used to call their engines, "magnum" and "vortec" is a name chevy uses to make you think something special is going on under the hood when actually when you take off the electronics its technology that has been around for about a century...internal combustion engine.

It's a corruption of the word vortex. A vortex is a swirling like a tornado. It is thought that if the gas-air mixture can swirl as in a vortex, it will ignite better.

tornado effect!! and in my opinion it works. I have the best running 4,3 cpi vortec engine in my 94 S10 Blazer 4x4. I love it.

there is a marked difference in the cylinder head,s.....vortex head,s will mix your fuel mixture better......they are not interchangeable with other cylinder head design.s.
