it's blood and blood is not black, you should never be bleeding during a bowel movement, you need to go to a doctor as soon as possible, there could be something more serious going on

You're right that blood evidence from stomach ulcers is usually black, but when the blood is coming from closer to the anus (or the anus itself) it will often still be red. Could be anal fissures or hemorrhoids. Also possible are colon polyps, colon cancer, or Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD).

WebMD (www.webmd.com) has some additional information on these things--including symptoms and treatment. You are right to be going to a doctor regardless. Bless you for having the sense to realize that! (A lot of the people asking questions on here don't quite understand that.)

Also, as for the side pain, you might want to journal when it gets worse, occurs, and how that relates to when you ate and what you ate.

Good luck!

A small amount of bright red blood probably means hemorrhoids or an anal fissure [ crack in the skin ]
Either way, drink a lot more fluids, and eat more fiber so you go at least every day. The longer it stays in there, the drier and harder it gets, causing some trauma to your anus when you poop.
If it is a fissure [ look with a mirror ] wipe with baby wipes whenever you go to get really clean; soak in a tub once a day; and put vaseline or even baby ointment on the 'crack.' Works on babies, too!
'Old' blood, from higher up like stomach or intestines, is tarry and black [ and smells very, very bad ].
