No, it's not true. It is a large bird, probably a crane. The crew borrowed several large birds from a nearby zoo to make the forest set look more alive and natural. The crane stretches out its wings in the middle back of the set just as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Lion start to skip down the YBR singing "We're Off to see the Wizard" after the "beehive" run-in with the Wicked Witch of the West.
There are lots of rumors and urban legends surrounding the movie. This one is the most wide-spread, probably followed next by the idea that the munchkins were "little drunks." That idea was spread after Judy Garland cracked the joke in an interview. A few of them might have had a little temper, but they weren't stumbling through the studio

We were talking about this very subject at a camp-out last week-end. Here's the story. Supposedly, in the haunted forrest scene, from the Wizard of Oz, if you look very closely you can see someone hanging from a tree in the backround. People who are loyal to this movie swear that this is captured on film. I say if that had really happened no way would that scene be part of the movie.

No, this urban legend is completely FALSE! In the beginning of the tinman scene, you will notice very briefly, a crane walking aroundon the set. It was placed there to set the mystical mood of the forest. At the end of the scene, what you are actually seeing, is the crane walking in front of the backdrop of trees, raising its neck and head.
The trees that you see someone supposedly "hanging" from are painted onto a backdrop. The illusion of depth in the forest is just that - an illusion created by the on-set trees and the backdrop behind them. When you see the 3 characters skip off to the right, they are basically at the farthest point on-set from the camera, so anything you see behind them is a 2-dimensional backdrop painted to give the illusion of a deep, lush forest.
I'm glad you asked this question. Hopefully this answer will have exposed the truth to one of the longest running urban legends of all time.

It's purely a myth, but a very popular and long-lived one (as you can see from the mixed answers you've been getting).
No, someone started a rumor that a munchkin hung himself some time during the scene with the talking trees, and there IS something swinging in the background that is slightly visible, but everyone involved in the film swears it was no munchkin (probably a sandbag that came loose or something). All little people present and accounted for! :)

No, it is one of the large birds in the background that is startled and leaps up out of the bushes.
If you look at the clip on snopes, it's really quite clear that it's not a person hanging.

I have never heard of this until now. It makes me very curious, though. I agree with whoever said that that would not have been included in the movie, although there could've been the small possibility that they missed it, somehow when they were shooting. I never heard about the ben hur thing either. now I'm VERY curious. morbid little me......

It is claimed that a cast member hung themselves and he can be seen hanging in the back of a scene. I do not know if this is a myth or not.

it is a munchin, and no you don't see them doing it, you see him hanging in the back ground. the same as three men and a baby there is a shot gun in a corner of one scene and next you see a little boy appear out of no where.
