The women's suffrage movement was a very long and arduous process. Many women were beaten and brutalized along the way for "stepping outside the duties of the home." As early as the 1600s, women began to demand the right to vote. That is when many individual women began to seek suffrage. In fact, in 1647, a female land owner in Maryland demanded the right to vote. But she was unsuccessful. The mass movement of women toward the right to vote first emerged in the United States in 1848. This same struggle was raging in many other countries. In 1893, New Zealand was the first country to grant women the right to vote in the national elections. In the U.S. the right to vote was granted to women over a period of years in the early 19th century. Washington: 1910; California: 1911; New York: 1917; Oklahoma: 1918; and Tennessee: 1920. Finally by about 1918 most of the U.S. and then 1920, Canada had given women the right to vote. This fight had been a very hard battle. Women were essentially dependent on men allowing them the right to vote. They were seen as homemakers who had no minds of their own. Many men believed that they did not have the mental capacity to reach an informed decision seperate from their husbands. Also, many pastors and religious leaders felt that giving women the vote would lead to the demise of the family. Now, in all countries, women have taken their rightful place as informed voters involved in the political process.
