Write.

Just kidding.

Journalism involves much more than writing. Journalists many times have to generate story ideas to decide what they will write about, if they are not given stories by an editor. Journalists must conduct interviews and do a tremendous amount of research to ensure their stories are accurate. Journalists also get to meet a lot of really interesting people. They write and edit, edit, edit and proofread like crazy. It's a great profession... and it's actually a lot more complicated than this, but I love it!

What Does A Journalist Do

Gurly and Walter are pretty much correct, except journalists generally don't edit. Most of the time, they don't even use spell-check.

You show up for work, check your email and phone messages and your "tickle file" (files you keep that are date sensitive). The editor may have an assignment for you to work on. Otherwise, you work your beat: calling contacts, going to meetings (ig. school board or city hall), working on stories you've already started.

Often, there are stories that come in which you have to turn around for the next day's edition.

Most of the work involves researching and interviewing (or waiting for people to call you back). About 10 percent of it is actually writing.

Gurley~gurl is correct. She has described journalism well, but there are also the opportunities of becoming a 'foreign correspondent' working in various countries around the world which requires a good knowledge of politics, economics, languages and cultures along with history, The same with becoming a 'war correspondent'.

Research, write, edit, proofread, publish.
It's an eye sore. And you burn your retinas when the contrast is too bright.
