You cat sleeps all day because he's a CAT. Cats sleep at least 18 hours a day. They are not truly nocturnal but they can be more active at night.

I hate to generalize anything and yet... I've known many, many orange cats who were just the SWEETEST cats! Most orange cats are males but I had an orange female who was just a darling. I'm not saying that you should EVER pick an animal based on color, but if you have a choice and one choice is orange...

Also, the best way to keep the cat from hurting your kids is to teach the kids not to hurt the cat! Don't let a child manhandle the cat or tease him. Teach the kids to have respect for the kitty and the kitty won't ever feel he has to defend himself. And realize that SOME scratches are unavoidable -- a cat will scratch even when he's just playing.

Enjoy your cat -- he won't mind if you wake him up for a pat and a scratch on his shoulders!

I have a gray tabby female. She sleeps all day, because cats are nocturnal. She wouldn't be good with children though.

Some orange tabbies are good with children, but you can't pick a cat based on color. You need to learn the individual personality.

I got my cat, because she was at the rescue I volunteer with, and no on was putting in applications for her, after 6 months.

cats are mostly nocturnal, just like a wild cat. they hunt at night to have a better advantage over their prey. any cat can be good with children, it just depends on prior situation and how you raise them. with children, i suggest getting a fairly young cat, so that it can learn the children and eventually be ok with them. the color depends on your tastes, but it should not be the determining factor on wether or not you get a particluar cat. you need to look at the personality first and see how it acts around your children.
