When I was your age, I was glad to get any food on my plate. After all, I had to walk 5 miles just to get to school, and that was in 10' of snow, and it was uphill both ways. So eat your food.

When I was told that starving kids in China would be thrilled to have those butter beans, I always wished I could write to one of those kids and ask. And if they really did love them, I'd send my plate.
As an adult, I wonder why anyone would say such a thing. If the child tries three bites of something and doesn't like it, that's fine. And none of this business of eating it at one meal and declaring at the next meal that they don't like it.
Overall, I never had problems eating my veggies, and my children and grandchildren don't have problems, either.

Mom and Dad didn't tell stories to try to get us to eat vegetables. We had to eat some kind of veggie, but Mom would always make a variety to pick from..

Ha ha, yeah they did that! My mom did that with spinach, which I have always hated and still do. She used the thing about other kids starving in Africa. I would ask why don't we send it to them then?

Yeah! I remember that. I always asked Mom to go ahead and send my food to Armenia then.
How could it help them that I was eating? I never understood.

I wasn't really told stories. I was told to "take at least three bites." If I tried to cheat and take little bites, I was told, "Take a hundred of those bites or take three normal bites."
It worked for me because I took those three bites. If I liked them I finished them. If I didn't, I didn't finish them.
