Humans have toes because our evolutionary ancestors had toes. All quadrupedal animals have toes. They also serve a purpose in the way we walk.

For support on two legs, I think. Did you ever notice that bipeds (humans, sometimes primates, and birds) have long, conspicuous "toes", while quadrupeds either have hooves or very short toes/claws that cannot be individually manipulated as easily?
