I removed the starter from my '89 E-350 Econoline van and, while replacing it with a new one, realized I had forgotten which terminal one of the cables was hooked up to.

Starters normally have either two or three wires - one big that connects power from the battery, and this one cannot be connected incorrectly. If there is only one left, there should be no confusion. If there are two more left, they go to the bendix relay. If you switch them, nothing dangerous will happen - the relay will pull the rod in the wrong direction, and the starter will click but won't engage. In that case, just switch the thin wires, and everything will be OK.

The brass terminal gets the positive cable. The other is a ground strap.
