Get a good introductory book, the questions that you are asking indicate that there are a lot of other things you should know first. As a minimum size for a beginners tank 30 gallons should be considered minimum. Smaller tanks will work, but larger tanks have a better chance of success. A good basic introductory book will save money, time and fish in the long run. Good luck,it's a fun hobby. One more thing,if there's an aquarium club or society in your area they can be a great source of help.

Personally I think a 30 gallon is a good starter size. Generally speaking a larger tank allows for more room for error on the part of a new fish keeper and also allows for a greater selection of fish. Most require the same basic care, a 25% water change while cleaning the gravel done once a week. This only takes a few minutes more for a 30 gallon than it would a 20 or even a 10.

As for how many fish, that truly depends on which fish you select. I would suggest you take a trip to a pet shop, look over the tanks and various sizes and while there get a book about aquariums. Read up just a little and it will help significantly in your picking the right tank and the right fish for you. Feel free to email if you have any questions.

aa good size is anything smaller than a 30 gallon. a thirty gallon is like over 100 litres of water. youll be changing like 30 litres during each maintenance. thats three buckets of ten litres from the aquarium and another 3 from the taps to the aquarium. ten litres isn't too heavy or too light. you can start off with like a 30 litres and put guppies or neon tetras in it. the maintanance is very easy. don't get fish that will grow very big because you would need to buy a new bigger tank and maintenance will get harder.

A 20-30 gallon tank would be good. the rule on fish is that for every inch of fish you need a gallon of water.

I think that you should start out with a 29 gallon, or a 30 gallon. This is a perfect for a lot of fish. Get excellant filtration to promote healthy and beautiful fish.
