Usually the mother's OB-GYN does the circumcision since he/she is a surgeon. It is usually done in the hospital on the 2nd or 3rd day the baby is there. If the OB does not do circumcisions, there are other pediatricians and OB's that will do them - you have to call around or ask the hospital. It is better to get it done in the hospital than wait - the bigger the baby gets the more pain they experience and in the hospital they can monitor the baby and teach you how to take care of it.

It usually depends on your situation. If the baby is born in the hospital, the hospital staff will offer to have it done while he is there, so usually within the first day or two. A pediatrician would do it. If the baby is born at home or if you opt not to have it done while you are still in the hospital, you can set up an appointment with your chosen pediatrician. Many will do the procedure in their office, but some will have you go back to the hospital to have it done.

In Canada, they can do it while baby is still at the hospital after being born. Most that are performed are done by the "penile experts"...there is an actual name for these Dr.'s but I've lost it at the moment. They recommend having it done no later than 6 weeks of age or 12 lbs though (if you decide to wait to think about it).

The Jewish tradition is normally to wait for the 8th day after birth, unless there is some health reason to wait longer (or unless there are other circumstances - e.g. it's the Sabbath and the circumcision is for purposes of conversion).

Mine were both circumcised the day they went home. They just had to spend a few hours in the hospital to make sure everything was still fine. Either the Pediatrician, or your OB/GYN can do it. At least that's how it was for me.

I have 3 boys, each born in a different state. My oldest boy was born 31 days early and only weighed 5 lbs. He was completely healthy, but he wasn't circumcized until he was 6 weeks old. My 2nd boy was 6 wks early. He was born in Washington state and I had to make an appointment at my expense because our insurance wouldn't cover what they referred to as cosmetic surgery. And my 3rd boy, born 4 weeks early, in Utah...he was done the following morning and my dr. that delivered him did it. So it depends on a lot of things.

I can't remember which day my son was circumsized, we were there for 4 days, and it was done in the first 3 days. My OBGYN did it.
