I've always heard clear yet sometimes solid sounds, even around 2 am, like dragging chairs or moving desks on the floor. Imagine nails scratching on the glasses, that disturbing. I suppose they come directly from the roof, the 9th floor or another unit across the hall (Otherwise how can they be clear?). I told our security service about this, but they couldn't explain why. "Can anyone in any related field share professional experiences on my concern?"

Does your apartment have individual heat/air systems?

Sound travels through a variety of things, some carry sound better than others. Ductwork, for example, is a natural 'sound tunnel', and can carry sounds quite clearly, for long distances.

The building may have service trunks in your walls, which are actually open spaces where the wiring, plumbing, etc, are run, and you may be hearing noise that is coming up thru these service trunks. This is the most likely suspect, in my opinion, if youve eliminated the obvious 'next door' sounds.

On rare occasions, you can pick up noise transmitted thru the plumbing vent systems.

I would suggest that you systematically try to identify where the noises are coming from. If you can locate where they are emitting from in your apartment, then you can get sound dampening products, that work quite well, and apply them to that location.

Good Luck

You've got noisy neighbors as tenants, and the walls now on days are not sound proof, or solid like they use to make them. Don't worry it's not haunted or anything like that.. Buy a sound machine and get some rest.

I've heard sounds like that from he upstairs unit because they have hardwood floors. But not 2am! If the tenants in your building is friendly, ask them if they have the same experience.
