Why is it when you are at the checkout waiting to pay for your goods and the phone rings...all of a sudden the customer on the phone is more important that you are?

When I worked retail they used to say folks "inside the store" are more important than ones on the phone. Sucks huh?

It has been that way forever. When I was very young (I am not now) and started to work in a store, we were told not to let the phone ring more than a couple of rings and to help the person right away. I tried then to ask about the people who had been waiting at the counter (I worked in cosmetics) or checkstand etc. But the phone customer was more important. I guess they still are.

retail associates have a lot going on at one time and it is thier job to make EVERYONE happy. including the customer on the phone. sometimes the customer on the phone is getting back to you about something or inquiring about a previous request. it does not mean the other customer is more important because as soon as the phone is hung up you have full attention. i dont like to answer the phone when i am with a customer alothough sometimes there is no choice. the associate might have been going about it all wrong in this situation.. my question is...what happend to fair customers?!

The same could be said for customers who are at the checkout and talking on their phones while the cashier is trying to complete a transaction or waiting for payment.

if it is a legit call, then i understand, and wait. but if she/he say hi, how ya doing, where you at? i take it that it is a personal call. and i drum my fingers on the counter, keep checking my watch, or if that dont work, i get on my cell, call the store, and when she puts the other person on hold to answer, i tel her im in front of her, and would like some service. works every time.

Sadly, real customer service died years ago. I could tell you stories, but I'd get carpal tunnel syndrome in the process, so I'll spare you the ugly details.
