I have been given permission to access my computer at work. My employer has set up a VPN for me to access the server, but when I am using the Remote Desktop connection- I am getting an error message - "The client could not connect to the remote computer". I have already made sure that my firewalls are turned off.

The It guys at work did the whole ping thing earlier and said that it was ok. Are there any settings that i need to make sure are on? I have already done the remote access on both ends.

If im understanding what you are saying, You have the VPN software installed and setup on your home computer and you connect to your companies network ok, just Remote Desktop is not working.

On your home computer what OS are you using. Windows XP Home can not use the Remote Desktop option, only XP Pro.....

Your IT guys deal with XP Pro all day everyday or NT, and probably do not know or are not thinking about XP Home not being able to Remote Desktop. You will have to get a copy of XP Pro and install it.....

If your setup is the same as I have at work, you'll have to connect with the VPN first before you can run Remote Desktop. Otherwise, Remote Desktop won't be able to find the computer you're trying to connect to.

ok, heres a few ideas, firewalls are a fawker when it comes to vpn's, if nobody is there to check the firewall settings on the other side u may be arsed out, 2. if ur computer is set to hibernate or shut down then u won't be remoting into that box anytime soon, other than that it is good to be sure that the computers are set to auto negotiate, so go to ur network settings, ur network card properties, configure, and make sure that link speed and duplex are set to auto negotiate, there are a long list of other things to do and u would be better googling troubleshooting remote desktop in XP

If you are using a vpn, this is not the same as remote desktop. You need to speak to your admin about setting up your end.

Do you have rights to connect to the computer? Is the computer set up to accept remote connections? That has to be set up in the individual computer, and users given remote access rights.

First thing first. Try to ping you office PC.

I assumed that it has private IP address. Ping that address. If that works, then only try to connect Remote Desktop with the can-ping IP address.

Good luck.
